The Suspension of Tariffs Against Mexico-- A Mexican Perspective ("México fue tratado con mucho respeto y llegamos a este acuerdo” [“Mexico was treated with great respect and we reached this agreement”]")

 

 

It was announced that after a meeting between the presidents of the United States and Mexico, the United States side suspended imposition of tariffs for a month. The U.S. side of this communication and its consequences were well described in the (English speaking) press.  As interesting, perhaps, was the characterization of the event from the Mexican side. To that end, the press release issued by the Office of the President of Mexico might be a good starting point.

It goes without saying that the contrast between this and the meeting with the President of Ukraine is quite telling in virtually every respect, bus suggests the parameters of the new protocols and expectations  when dealing with U.S. leadership.  This is something the press is both picking up and distributing in their role as agent of capacity building among other foreign officials (eg,  How Mexico’s Leader Is Rewriting the Rules for Handling Trump: President Claudia Sheinbaum impressed Trump by sticking to her guns without antagonizing him). What President Sheinbaum adds is the internal narrative necessary to translate the protocols and performance roles for US relations with the national expectations of the local elites and electorate. In that context the festival idea might well be a master stroke, at least within the parameters of Mexican politics:

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is planning a festival on Sunday in the capital’s historic main square facing the National Palace, after President Trump suspended tariffs on Mexican exports until April 2. Sheinbaum had initially called Mexicans to a mass rally at the Zócalo, the capital city’s main square, as an act of unity to announce retaliatory measures had Trump followed through with his tariff threat. But now, there was no need, she said on Thursday. Sheinbaum said Sunday’s mass gathering would go on, but with a radically different tone: it would now be a party to celebrate the suspension of the tariffs. “We will have a festival and invite musical groups,” she said. • Durante la llamada la Jefa del Ejecutivo Federal expuso al Presidente Donald Trump que en el mes de febrero hubo reducción del 41.5 por ciento en las incautaciones de fentanilo en Estados Unidos
   
• Recordó que el domingo se llevará a cabo un festival en el Zócalo de la Ciudad de México para informar al pueblo el acuerdo alcanzado con EUA

 

La Presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo resaltó que México fue tratado con mucho respeto en la llamada de este jueves con el Presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, con quien acordó que a nuestro país no se le requerirá pagar aranceles en los productos que se encuentren dentro del Tratado entre México, Estados Unidos y Canadá (T-MEC), lo cual tendrá vigencia hasta el 2 de abril, fecha en la que EUA anunciará aranceles recíprocos para todos los países.

“México fue tratado con mucho respeto. Y llegamos a este acuerdo que realmente beneficia a ambas naciones: Seguir colaborando, cooperando en distintos temas y al mismo tiempo, en el marco del respeto entre nosotros, mantener esta cooperación ”, destacó durante la conferencia matutina: “Las mañaneras del pueblo”.

Explicó que durante la llamada le expuso al Presidente Trump una gráfica que muestra que los resultados que ha tenido el Gobierno de México particularmente en febrero se reflejan en una reducción de 41.5 por ciento en las incautaciones de fentanilo en la frontera, de acuerdo con datos del Customs and Border Protection (CBP) de los EUA.

“Le dije: ‘Estamos teniendo resultados, presidente Trump. ¿Por qué ahora que puso las tarifas, pues cómo vamos a seguir cooperando, colaborando, con algo que daña al pueblo de México? Y no fue ni amenaza, nada, nada, nada, sencillamente: ‘Entiéndame a mí que, para mí, lo más importante es mi pueblo’. Y que yo necesito, pues seguir colaborando y cooperando con ustedes, pero necesitamos igualdad de circunstancias”, comentó.

Precisó que la disminución de las incautaciones de fentanilo se debe en gran medida a las acciones en materia de seguridad que se han impulsado como el envío desde el 3 de febrero de 10 mil elementos de la Guardia Nacional a la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos; así como la decisión del Gabinete de Seguridad de enviar a 29 personas privadas de la libertad a Estados Unidos.

“Si nosotros estamos incautando más fentanilo en México, pues va a pasar menos fentanilo a los Estados Unidos, cosa que hemos estado informando cada 15 días”, agregó.

Asimismo, comentó que durante la conversación abordaron los acuerdos a los que los equipos de ambos gobiernos llegaron durante reuniones en Washington en días pasados en las que establecieron trabajar en la reducción del tráfico de drogas ilegales de México a Estados Unidos y reducción del tráfico de armas ilegales de Estados Unidos a México.

La Jefa del Ejecutivo Federal destacó que no solo es un logro de la Presidenta de México, sino de todas y todos los mexicanos.

“Yo, la verdad, quiero decir que fuimos tratados con mucho respeto. Digo ‘fuimos’, porque sí, es a la Presidenta de México, pero es al pueblo de México, porque yo represento al pueblo de México. Que todo lo planteamos siempre en este mes y siempre lo vamos a plantear por convicción: Que se puede colaborar, coordinarnos, hacer muchas cosas juntos siempre en el marco de respeto a nuestra soberanía, que es la posición que siempre hemos planteado.

Aseguró que esta no será la última llamada que sostenga con su homólogo de los Estados Unidos ya que hay muchos temas que deben seguir platicando como el respeto a los mexicanos que viven del otro lado de la frontera.

Destacó que México tiene que trabajar hacia adelante en el fortalecimiento de su soberanía de autosuficiencia, lo cual es parte del Plan México y del fortalecimiento del mercado interno para generar un desarrollo económico con bienestar.

Recordó que el próximo domingo 9 de marzo, a las 12:00 horas, se reunirá en el Zócalo de la Ciudad de México con las y los mexicanos en un festival donde explicará el acuerdo al que se llegó con el Presidente Trump, además de que aprovechará para recordar la importancia de la reforma al Poder Judicial.

“Voy a explicar el logro que significa este acuerdo entre los presidentes y entre nuestros pueblos, y vamos a invitar ahí a grupos musicales para festejar con el pueblo de México”, añadió.

Por ello, invitó a todas y todos los mexicanos, así como a los paisanos que viven en los Estados Unidos, a acudir al Zócalo capitalino.

During the call, the Head of the Federal Executive explained to President Donald Trump that in the month of February there was a 41.5 percent reduction in fentanyl seizures in the United States

She recalled that on Sunday a festival will be held in the Zócalo of Mexico City to inform the people of the agreement reached with the United States

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo highlighted that Mexico was treated with great respect in the call this Thursday with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, with whom she agreed that our country will not be required to pay tariffs on products that are within the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), which will be in effect until April 2, date on which the United States will announce reciprocal tariffs for all countries.

“Mexico was treated with great respect. And we reached this agreement that really benefits both nations: to continue collaborating, cooperating on different issues and at the same time, within the framework of respect between us, to maintain this cooperation,” he highlighted during the morning conference: “The morning press conferences of the people.”

She explained that during the call he showed President Trump a graph that shows that the results that the Government of Mexico has had, particularly in February, are reflected in a 41.5 percent reduction in fentanyl seizures at the border, according to data from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) of the USA.

“I told him: ‘We are producing results, President Trump. If you impose tariffs now, how are we going to continue cooperating, collaborating, with something that harms the people of Mexico? And it was not a threat, nothing, nothing, nothing, simply: ‘Understand me that, for me, the most important thing is my people. ’ And that I need, well, to continue collaborating and cooperating with you, but we need equality of circumstances,” he commented.

She said that the decrease in fentanyl seizures is largely due to security actions that have been promoted, such as the dispatch of 10,000 National Guard elements to the border between Mexico and the United States since February 3; as well as the decision of the Security Cabinet to send 29 people deprived of their liberty to the United States.

“If we are seizing more fentanyl in Mexico, then less fentanyl will be transferred to the United States, something that we have been reporting every 15 days,” she added.

She also commented that during the conversation they addressed the agreements that the teams of both governments reached during meetings in Washington in recent days in which they agreed to work on reducing illegal drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States and reducing illegal arms trafficking from the United States to Mexico.

The Head of the Federal Executive stressed that it is not only an achievement of the President of Mexico, but of all Mexicans.

“I, the truth is, I want to say that we were treated with great respect. I say 'we went', because yes, it is to the President of Mexico, but it is to the people of Mexico, because I represent the people of Mexico. We always raise everything this month and we will always raise it out of conviction: That we can collaborate, coordinate, do many things together always within the framework of respect for our sovereignty, which is the position we have always raised.

She assured that this will not be the last call he will have with his counterpart from the United States since there are many issues that they must continue to discuss, such as respect for Mexicans who live on the other side of the border.

She stressed that Mexico has to work forward in strengthening its self-sufficiency sovereignty, which is part of the Mexico Plan and the strengthening of the internal market to generate economic development with well-being.

She recalled that next Sunday, March 9, at 12:00 noon, she will meet with Mexicans at the Zócalo in Mexico City at a festival where she will explain the agreement reached with President Trump, and will also take advantage of the opportunity to recall the importance of the reform of the Judicial Branch.

“I am going to explain the achievement that this agreement between the presidents and between our peoples means, and we are going to invite musical groups there to celebrate with the people of Mexico,” he added.

Therefore, she invited all Mexicans, as well as her countrymen who live in the United States, to come to the capital's Zócalo.
