Religion, Social Norms, and the State--The 2014 Letter of the Sacerdotes Mayores de Ifá of Cuba

For the last two years I have written of the annual letter of the Cuban Council of the High Priests of Ifá (Consejo Cubano De Sacerdotes Mayores De Ifá), the practitioners of traditional religion brought over from West Africa with the slave trade and now naturalized as a powerful indigenous religion throughout the Caribbean and growing in the United States. The Consejo Cubano De Sacerdotes Mayores De Ifá just released their annual letter for 2014; Letra del Año 2014 (On the history and purpose of the letter in Nigeria and the New World).  These annual letters suggest  the nature of divine will and advice for a propitious year ahead.  It serves the state the way all priestly  interventions are meant to--advice, connection with the divine, and authoritative means of conveying the appropriate forms of responding to events. Because these indigenous religions ought to be accorded equal dignity with the religions brought to the United States by other immigrant communities, I thought it useful, as we contemplation the New Year's messages of the world's religious leaders (e.g., Message of HIs Holiness Francis for the Celebration of the World Day of Peace, 1 Jan 2014 ("it is easy to realize that fraternity is the foundation and pathway of peace.")), that we ought to heed these messages as well.

This year's advice for Cuba is particularly interesting and in some respects quite sophisticated. They are grounded in part on the most influential aspect of divine connection for the year--the orisha Yemanyá, who is the essence of the ocean and of motherhood, and a fierce protector of children. Her name is a shorthand of the Yoruba "Yeye omo eja" that mean "Mother whose children are like fish." In Cuba Yemamyá is syncretized with Our Lady of Regla.  The influence of Yemanyá  is bounded by another powerful orisha this year--Eleggua--usually depicted as a child (el niño de Atocha for example) and associated with communication and the control of the crossroads (fate); the orisha who must be invoked before anything can proceed, transpire or succeed in the world., but also a trickster. Together these orisha's frame the advice for the year.  The 2014 message (refranes del signo) is organized as four  that suggest transitions, reversals, and the danger of overreaching. (the butterfly that seeks to fly before its time will have its wings burned; I have everything and need everything; God gives beard to those without hair; and a king will die as a prince is crowned). Those are particularly interesting in the Cuban context for which it is focused.  More importantly perhaps are the notions of the emptiness of one's desires, which can  amount to precisely what one did not want.  This is in marked contrast to the 2013 message (refranes del signo) is organized as three sayings or proverbs: (1) appearances will be deceiving; (2) on earth there will be an absence of divine justice; and (3) that which appears to be (or figures as) substantial or important is not and that which does is not. The major 2014 annual undertaking involves literally unity and conflict among contradictions,  separation and discord, and the tidal wave of irresistible forces).  This accords with the proverbial insifghts for th eyear that suggests the illusion of earthly activity. The recommendations that follow expand on these more oracular pronouncements.  They focus on religious harmony, and on the dangers of physical events involving weather related to the ocean.  This will be a difficult age for the brotherhood at the top of the message fo Pope Francis.

Consejo Cubano De Sacerdotes Mayores De Ifá

CONSEJO CUBANO DE SACERDOTES MAYORES DE IFA LETRA DEL AÑO 2014 Signo: Baba Eyiogbe Profecía: Ire ariku oyale lowo Orunmila (un bien de salud, gracias a Orunmila) Aldimú: Akara bibo. Ponerle a Orunmila 16 rodajas de pan con cascarilla y manteca de cacao, acompañado con 2 velas. Gobierna: Yemayá Acompaña: Eleguá Bandera: Azul con ribete rojo. EBO: 1- chivito, 1 gallo, agua de mar, añil, una piedra de arrecife. pluma de tiñosa, telas blanca y azul, tierra de la puerta de la casa, tierra de los zapatos, pelo de chiva, una granada, pecado ahumado, jutia ahumada, maíz tostado, manteca de corojo, miel, 2 cocos, 2 velas, manteca de cacao, Opolopowo. REFRANES DEL SIGNO 1- La mariposa quiso volar antes de tiempo y se le quemó las alas. 2- Todo lo tengo y todo me falta. 3- Dios le da barba al que no tenga quija. 4- A Rey muerto, Príncipe coronado. En este signo nace: Las aguas y las tierras. La unidad y lucha de contrarios. La separación y la discordia. El ras de mar y sus nefastas consecuencias. OBRAS DEL SIGNO: Mojarse el cuerpo con agua añilada y regar agua añilada, dentro de la casa, dejándola por un rato y después baldear la misma Plantas del signo: Granada, ceiba. RECOMENDACIONES Dice Ifa: Que debemos ser muy organizados en todos los aspectos de la vida, para garantizar una mejor forma de vida. Dice Ifa: Que debemos evitar bochornos, ya que esto conllevaría a reacciones adversas sobre nuestra salud y en nuestras relaciones interpersonales. Dice Ifa: Cumplimentar con Olokun y Yemaya según los designios que nos ofrezcan en seguimiento religioso y espiritual, nuestros mayores. Dice Ifa: Que debemos este año darnos un pargo a la cabeza previa consulta. Dice Ifa: Que debemos evitar el consumo de alcohol, tabaco y drogas. Dice Ifa: Que debemos esmerar el cuidado de nuestros mayores, manteniendo una buena relación con ellos, para así estimularlos ya que eso le hará mucho bien. Dice Ifa: Que debemos realizar todos en la casa, ebo (limpieza, sacrificio) para así, evitar pérdidas y llantos. Dice Ifa: Que debemos vestir de blanco sistemáticamente para depurar energías negativas. Dice Ifa: Que cuando invoquemos a un oricha no debemos olvidar el uso del agua. Dice Ifa: Que se recomienda el acudir a sus mayores siempre, para tener la bendición de Olodumare. Dice Ifa: Que debemos cuidarnos de las enfermedades, digestiva, cardiovasculares, los pulmones, la vista, los riñones, la columna vertebral y las enfermedades de trasmisión sexual. Dice Ifa: Que este año se debe hacer un seguimiento severo a los fenómenos climatológicos, que conlleven a perdidas, por ras de mar, sismos, lluvias, penetraciones del mar, inundaciones, huracanes. Dice Ifa: Que debemos evitar ingerir comidas atrasadas y frutas arenosas con el fin de evitar problemas digestivos. Dice Ifa: Que debemos mantener la familia unidad tanto familiar como religiosa. Dice Ifa: Que debemos ser humilde y sencillos, y evitar la soberbia, el genio y la mala forma para con los demás. Dice Ifa: Que se recomienda darle un chivito a Elegua, para mantener los caminos abiertos. Dice Ifa: Que debemos esmerarnos con la higiene tanto de nuestros cuerpos como de nuestras viviendas. Dice ifa: Que debemos evitar el vernos inmiscuidos en negocios ilícitos o de corrupción para así evitar enfrentamientos con la justicia. Dice Ifa: Que los religiosos debemos evitar la falta de respeto, entre nuestra familia tanto sanguínea como religiosa e incluso entre compañeros de trabajo. Para conocimiento general El primero de Diciembre del 2013, con la presencia de un número significativo de Babalawos cubanos y de otros países y los miembros del consejo Cubano de Sacerdotes Mayores de Ifa, se realizaron las ceremonias correspondientes a la Pre- apertura de la Letra del año 2014 en la Asociación Cultural Yoruba de Cuba. Las recomendaciones fueron las siguientes: Se dio lo que pidieron las 25 posiciones fundamentales. En todos los casos la respuesta de las deidades, fueron muy satisfactorias. El día 30 de Diciembre del 2013, se hicieron los sacrificios correspondientes a las deidades que se determinó en la Pre- Apertura.
