Greetings from the Australian Centre on China in the World at The Australian National University!
The theme for this year’s ANU China in the World Forum is “Navigating US-China Rivalry: Responses from the Pacific Rim”. The Forum will be held on 28–30 August at the ANU, Canberra.
The Forum will bring together international scholars to examine the consequences of US–China rivalry for middle powers and smaller states across the Pacific Rim, including local responses from state and non-state actors in the region.
We are inviting papers on the following topics: USA’s and China’s evolving foreign policy and diplomacy in the region, alignment behaviour in the Pacific Rim, China’s economic statecraft, great powers’ soft power and sharp power, maritime security, roles of Chinese diasporas, regional institutions, and Chinese trade and investment in the region. We hope you can participate in the CIW Forum by contributing an original paper.

| China’s
rise as a world power has profound implications for world peace,
regional security, international political economy, technological
advancement, climate response, and international organisation. The
rising power’s economic heft and military might, overseas economic
footprint, and ambition in global governance have inevitably challenged
the US-dominated world order. The increasing rivalry between the US and
China is posing new challenges for Pacific-rim countries, which must
navigate the interests and preferences of both powers while assessing
the domestic policy implications of their strategic choices. The
conference will bring together international scholars to examine
consequences of US-China rivalry for middle powers and smaller states
across the Pacific Rim, and interrogate strategic responses and agencies
from the state and non-state actors in the region. We invite original
papers on the following topics:
- US/China’s evolving foreign policy and diplomacy in the region
- Alignment behaviour in the Pacific Rim
- China’s economic statecraft, including the targets’ responses
- Soft power and sharp power
- Resources (land and sea)
- Maritime security and security dilemmas
- Chinese immigration and Chinese diasporas
- Regional institutions
We
invite scholars who are interested in participating in the 2024 China
in the World Forum to submit their institutional affiliation, a 250-word
abstract, and a brief CV on the Google form on or before 24 March 2024.
Decisions will be communicated to the applicants by 12 April 2024.
Selected participants can apply for travel and accommodation subsidies,
