Fabio Bassan has organized an exciting series of engaged discussions around quite contemporary topics of international law, politics, and their institutions in the face of the cascading crises that appear to make the current moment.

Scheduled for Friday, June 12, 2020, at 3 PM CET (9 AM US East Coast Time) is  Executive Webinar Room 451: 'International Organizations and Systemic Crises'. With Fabio Bassan (Roma Tre University), Larry Catá Backer (Penn State University) and Susanna Cafaro (Università of Salento). The discussion is in English (my Italian is not quite up to the task).

We will speak to two issues.  The first one is related to the nimbleness of international organizations to respond effectively to crisis.  The second issue is a consequence of the first one, that the most significant gap on the level of international economic organizations is that of a collective reaction to a systemic crisis.

Professore Ordinario di Diritto Internazionale, Università Roma Tre. Conciliatore presso l’ICSID, il Tribunale presso la Banca Mondiale per la soluzione delle controversie tra Stati e investitori. Fondatore e Direttore del Sovereign Wealth Funds Law Centre, centro di studi giuridici sui fondi sovrani costituito nel 2011. Direttore del REMEIC, Centro Studi su regole dei Mercati, Imprese e Consumatori. E’ stato visiting scholar presso l’Università di Barcellona nel 2013, l’Università di Brasilia (UNB) nel 2008, il Georgetown University Law Center nel 1996.

Professor Larry Backer researches globalization, especially as it relates to the emergence of ways of understanding constitutional and enterprise law. His most recent work touches on the regulation of multinational corporations, sovereign wealth funds, transnational constitutionalism, and the convergence of public and private law. He researches issues of governments as private actors in global markets, the development of law and social norm systems to regulate business and human rights. He teaches classes in constitutional, corporate, and transnational law and policy. Professor Backer is a member of the American Law Institute and the European Corporate Governance Institute. He served as chair of the Penn State University Faculty Senate for 2012-2013.
È professore ordinario di Diritto dell’Unione europea. Ha iniziato a occuparsi di istituzioni europee quando andava a scuola, da militante del movimento federalista; poi le ha conosciute dall’interno lavorando nell’ufficio legale del Consiglio e della Bce; quindi ha cominciato a insegnarne il funzionamento nell’Università del Salento – a partire dal 2001 – dopo il dottorato e i primi incarichi all’Università di Bologna. Fa parte del comitato scientifico degli European Papers e della Revue dell’Euro, è membro del Bretton Woods Committee e ha contribuito a fondare il Gruppo di Lecce.

Full Professor of International Law, Roma Tre University. Conciliator at ICSID, the Tribunal at the World Bank for the resolution of disputes between States and investors. Founder and Director of the Sovereign Wealth Funds Law Center, a center for legal studies on sovereign wealth funds established in 2011. Director of REMEIC, Center for Studies on Market, Business and Consumer Rules. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Barcelona in 2013, the University of Brasilia (UNB) in 2008, the Georgetown University Law Center in 1996.

Susanna Cafaro (University of Salento)

She is full professor of European Union law. She has been engaging with European institutions from the time she went to school, as a member of the federalist movement; then she got to know them from the inside working in the legal office of the Council and the ECB; then she began to teach how it works in the University of Salento - starting from 2001 - after her doctorate and her first assignments at the University of Bologna. She is part of the scientific committee of the European Papers and the Revue of the Euro, is a member of the Bretton Woods Committee and has helped found the Lecce Group.
