Call for Papers and Panels: 31srt Annual Conference of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy (August 2021; Virtual)

 

 

I am delighted to pass along the call for papers for the 31st annual conference of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy.  The theme of this year's annual meeting are the synergies and interconnection between three of the most important events in Cuba that occurred over the course of the last year: (1) the COVID-19 pandemic; (2) the economic reforms announced in the summer of 2020; and (3) the culminating events of the 8th Congress of the Cuban Communist Party.  The events point back to Cuba's past and forward to reform--but perhaps not reform entirely to the taste of the US and elements fo the Cuban diaspora.  In any case there is much to ponder--large segments of which may have a global impact.

COVID and the VIII Party Congress: Reforming the Cuban Economy

August 12-14, 2021

 

 

The theme of this year’s conference is Cuba’s economic reforms, the impact of COVID and the VIII Congress of the Cuban Communist Party.  Cuba is in a tremendous state of flux, one that is likely to affect all aspects of the society.  No one can be sure how this will turn out, but ASCE’s members old and new have for more than 30 years brought understanding and analysis to the Cuban puzzle.  That experience and familiarity with Cuba is needed more than ever as we note that our work is being widely read and watched by more people in government and on the Island. This year we will also focus on the Cuban diaspora.  FIU’s Cuban Research Institute will take the lead in developing that part of the program. 

 

Abstracts or panel proposals should describe original work related to Cuba’s economy in a broad sense, including legal, sectoral, and social aspects of economic development, or Cuba’s exodus and the Cuban diaspora and its economic and social relationship to the island.  We welcome papers that compare Cuba or its diaspora to other country or regional experiences.

 

Other topics are welcome as well. In previous conferences, ASCE’s program has included sessions organized around development issues; legal issues; U.S. policy towards Cuba; regional comparisons; self-employment; tourism; agriculture; origins of the revolution; commercial relations; education; public health; social welfare; demographic issues; civil society; human rights; environmental issues and climate change.

 

Abstracts or panel proposals must not exceed 250 words and must be accompanied by a 150-word biography for each author. For consideration by the Program Committee, abstracts, panel proposals, biographies, or full papers should be sent via email to:

Please include the words "ASCE 2021 CONFERENCE SUBMISSION" in the subject line.  Authors of accepted papers or panels will be required to register for the Conference.
