Remarks for the Manchester International Law Centre (MILC) Speaker Series on 9 October 2017: "The Financial Sector Responsibility for Human Rights Conduct of Borrowers Lessons from the Extractives Sector"

I was honored to participate as a speaker for the Manchester International Law Centre (MILC) Speaker Series on 9 October 2017. I delivered remarks on "The Financial Sector Responsibility for Human Rights Conduct of Borrowers: Lessons from the Extractives Sector." The remarks were delivered at the University of Manchester Law School. Great thanks to John Haskell for his "above and beyond the call of duty" efforts in putting this together, to the gracious hospitality of Toby Seddon (Head of School), and the faculty and students at the Law School.  The great questions of  Jean d’Aspremont, Chris Thornhill, and Mary Vogel plus a  marvelous group of graduate students made for a stimulating evening of intellectual engagement.

More on the Manchester International Law Centre follows.

From the MILC web site:
Manchester's School of Law has a long and distinguished reputation in research in the area of international law in the United Kingdom and in Europe. As early as the 1920s, when the renowned James Leslie Brierly was teaching at the School of Law, Manchester established itself as a centre of excellence for research in international law. Outstanding scholars such as Don Greig, Derek Bowett, Vaughan Lowe, Catherine Redgwell and Robert Cryer also made a part of their career at the School.

The Manchester International Law Centre was founded in 2014 by Professors Jean d’Aspremont and Iain Scobbie with the help of Dr Yenkong Hodu and Dr Jackson Maogoto. It is now a group of over 30 academics and PhD students who research international law. MILC is an internationally-recognized centre of academic excellence whose members seek to make innovative contributions to international legal scholarship while also providing consultancy and advice to governments, international organisations and NGOs on questions of international law. MILC organises the prestigious Melland Schill Lecture Series.
