Part 48: (The Self Coupled and Satan--Harm, Torture and the Educated Social Self): Dialogues on a Philosophy for the Individual

(Pix (c) Larry Catá Backer 2015)

With this post Flora Sapio and I (and friends from time to time) continue an experiment in collaborative dialogue. The object is to approach the issue of philosophical inquiry from another, and perhaps more fundamentally ancient, manner. We begin, with this post, to develop a philosophy for the individual that itself is grounded on the negation of the isolated self as a basis for thought, and for elaboration. This conversation, like many of its kind, will develop naturally, in fits and starts. Your participation is encouraged. For ease of reading Flora Sapio is identified as (FS), and Larry Catá Backer as (LCB).

The friends continue their discussion in which Flora Sapio responds to Larry Backer and Betita Horn Pepulim and takes up Larry's challenge of Paolo Freire in the education of the self. considers the moth, the harm principle and the self.

BHP: Dear Larry and Flora, in the opinion of John Stuart Mill the harm principle is the only who justifies the individual or collective interference in the freedom of action of another.

Thus, prevent damage it is the only reason justified the exercise of power directed to a member of a civilized society, against his will.

Stressing that trying to keep own physical or moral well does not justify the intervention in the life of another individual.

The only part of the conduct of any person which requires it to respond to society, it is one that concerns the individual interfere in the freedom of another individual.

With respect to conduct that concerns only himself, the individual has absolute right over her.
In this context, we must not forget Jung's words: everyone has a shadow, and this shadow, sometimes, creates an unconscious lock that frustrates our best intentions.

About individualization, this is a process that develops throughout life, it consists in the individual recognize himself as a unique being, different. However, this goal is only achieved if the "I" let the experiences become conscious. What is very difficult.

According to Jung, every individual it has a tendency to individuation, or self-development.

If we are absolutely sincere, we will see that when we analyze the Persona, we dissolve the mask and we found that, although it appears to be individual, the mask is, in fact, collective. In other words, the Persona is only a mask of the collective psyche. In the background the mask is just an adaptation to social conventions.

In a way, these data are real, but, in relation to the essential individuality of the individual, are only secondary aspects, why are the result of a compromise, in which the outside world has a greater weight to the individual than his inner world.

For Paulo Freire, you quoted Larry, man is a being unfinished. He knows it's unfinished and for this reason, he has to meet with others. This encounter with others is an objective necessity and a requirement of the creative process.

According to Freire, to conquer and transform the world, men should act on it, is from the action he performs, that he elaborates knowledge.

The object of knowledge is the world and the action itself that perform to conquer the world . Thus, knowledge is a consequence of the meeting of men and from how they interact.

In the political sphere, Paulo Freire argues that no one can know himself as the subject of the action. He concludes by saying that the relationships that are established between men can affirm or deny this condition.

And To conclude my text, I would like to remind you , Larry and Flora of the Habitus concept, developed by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. This concept originated with Aristotle, by Hexis expression, which means an arrangement, an arrangement, an acquired and strongly established state of moral character that guides our feelings and desires in a situation, and consequently our conduct.

LCB:Beitita, perfect!  But let's tale your insights one at a time.

1. Mill, and Anglo-English society, have embraced and continue to wrestle with the perfection of pragmatism and utility theory.  It is their greatest strength and a critical blindness.  We all embrace the harm principle now, after a century or so of Anglo-English cultural domination (and this is a good thing for the organization of communities based on the embedding of undifferentiated societal selves within individuals for good order and social stability). But it begs the question.  It always begs the question--how does one measure harm, according to what standard.  Who gets to decide and how is it to be organized and interpreted.  Consider abortion.  Depndiong on my values abortion rights harm either fetus or mother. . . or both.  And to what effect?  Pragmatism and utility provides no real moral compass.

2.  Thus to direct power to prevent damage in a civilized society is really the beginning rather than the end of the analysis.  Prevent damage, exercise of power and civilized society are malleable terms, at least at their edges.  More importantly, it serves to support my notion that ultility and pragmatism, and the good ordering of society have little to do with the differentiated individual and much more to do with the construction of the undifferentiated self residing within the bodies of the mass that make up a society.  We are all creatures of the embedding of those judgements and values that have been injected into us from birth.  When we speak to individual values, we speak at best to the scope of variation in societally tolerated expression, judged by the values of society.  When society itself divides--again consider abortion--on speaks to individual rights but one is really adjusting the base line valuations of the undifferenitated societal selves and its willingness to judge something useful, civilized and positive for the social order and good morals. Those on the wrong side of that communal conversation must either conform or flee, or rebel

3.  We have effectively been considering whether the rebellion of the individual is possible? There is a societal precedent--the rebellion of Lucifer.  Indeed, in the Anglo-American world the efforts of the differentiated self both to emerge and to engage with the commuinity of undifferentiated selves is viewed with the greatest horror.  It is, in a sense, the definiotion of evil--the rebellion of the self again its communion with the great aggregate of the self residing in the community of individuals under the throne of the Divine:  Consider the words of Milton:

Is this the Region, this the Soil, the Clime,
Said then the lost Arch-Angel, this the seat
That we must change for Heav'n, this mournful gloom
For that celestial light? Be it so, since he [ 245 ]
Who now is Sovran can dispose and bid
What shall be right: fardest from him is best
Whom reason hath equald, force hath made supream
Above his equals. Farewel happy Fields
Where Joy for ever dwells: Hail horrours, hail [ 250 ]
Infernal world, and thou profoundest Hell
Receive thy new Possessor: One who brings
A mind not to be chang'd by Place or Time.
The mind is its own place, and in it self
Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n. [ 255 ]
What matter where, if I be still the same,
And what I should be, all but less then he
Whom Thunder hath made greater? Here at least
We shall be free; th' Almighty hath not built
Here for his envy, will not drive us hence: [ 260 ]
Here we may reign secure, and in my choyce
To reign is worth ambition though in Hell:
Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heav'n.
But wherefore let we then our faithful friends,
Th' associates and copartners of our loss [ 265 ]
Lye thus astonisht on th' oblivious Pool,
And call them not to share with us their part
In this unhappy Mansion, or once more
With rallied Arms to try what may be yet
Regaind in Heav'n, or what more lost in Hell? [ 270 ]
(John Milton, Paradise Lost Bk 1))

4.  Thus, the individual may have an absolute right over him or herself.  But that right extends only within a small and quite confined space--confined by the framework of the undifferentiated self operating within societal constraints.  Those constrainst are understood, and spoken of, as individual constraints.  But they are not!  They are, as Foucault, in his own way understood, the self imposed disciplines constructed from out of materials received from the community and embedded in and as the self.

5.  And thus indeed, Jung describes the shadow.  We understand that shadow as Satan.  It exists.  But we are taught to resist. The process of individuation you describe, then, from a societal perspective, appears to be a lifelong act of the possibility of rebellion (in moral terms) or of a self reimagining (in Jungian terms). And in that process we both control chaos but also narrow the possibilities of a differentiated self that may be benign.  That, of course, may be the point you raise quite well in the form of the Persona. But Persona is the self, much of what is left to it.  And that is what tends to be discussed among the psycho philosophical crowd.  In part this is for protection and audience--people reward performances of what they like to hear (again a communal form of discipline of the self) and philosophers enjoy a ghood reward like the rest of us.

6.  In this context Feire becomes more interesting, both for his power and his failure.  Both of which you and Flora have begun to describe exquisitely. The connectivity of Feire to Bourdieu and Habitus is marvelous. Feire is the embodiment of the desire, strong in all cultural communities bent on making the aggregate individual, the undifferentiated self, in a particular image (to borrow the Biblical illusion).  Ina  sense one can see the value of Habitus in understanding the sociology of the collective or undifferentiated self.  And one can see the passive instrumentalism in the process.  For my taste, though, that instrumentalism is itself subject to the great inertial forces of ubiquitous power beyond simple instrumentalism.  It is for that reason that "things" always "get out of hand" when communities, through representatives seek to aggressively manage the collective self in particular ways.  The disasters of Soviet programming provides a spectacular case in point.  Another, of course is American Prohibition, and the Chinese Cultural Revolution.  The process is more complex, but the nature of education and its techniques remain a central element.  It is to that that we ought to devote more thought.

Beitita, perfeito!

Considere o aborto. Depndiong no meu valores aborto direitos dano ou feto ou a mãe. . . ou ambos. E para que efeito? Pragmatismo e utilitário fornece sem bússola moral real.

(John Milton, Paradise Lost Bk 1))

5. E, assim, de facto, Jung descreve a sombra. Entendemos que a sombra como Satanás. Ela existe.
