Part 3 (The Social Self and the Mother)--Dialogues on a Philosophy for the Individual: The Social Self

(Pix © Larry Catá Backer 2016)

Flora Sapio and I continue our experiment in collaborative dialogue. We move from the individual to the social self as we work toward a philosophy of the individual. While at first blush this appears to be well worn ground--who hasn't, over the course of the last 5,000 years, in every civilization with a recorded history NOT spent vast amounts of time thinking about the social self?  But much of this thinking starts at the social and works through the issues of control, management and socialization of the individual.  That is, they start from the core premise that the individual is the object of a project for which the social serves as an instrument and as an ends.  In the spirit of the emerging philosophy of the individual, we propose to invert the conversation--to start with the individual and work through the issues of control, management, and individuation of the social.

But we move from the individual in herself, to the individual as subject and as symbol, as something which, when observed and transformed from itself to the idea or symbol of itself, assumes a quite distinct, and useful, position for the organization of selves--and for the structure and operation of the law of the social.  To that end our conversation will likely flow around and through the following:
1--the social self as the reflection of the mother
2--the social self as a reflection of the family
3--social self as a reflection/result of one's ancestors
4--the social self as a reflection of God
5-the social self as a refection of the state
6--the social self as terrorist
7--the social self as orthodox
This conversation, like many of its kind, will develop naturally, in fits and starts.  Your participation is encouraged.

In this post Beitita Horm Pepulim (BHP) joins us again and responds to Flora Sapio's (FS) consideration the social self and the mother with a response in turn from LCB.

(BHP) Hello Flora and Larry. I read what you wrote and I think Flora, it is difficult to speak of the mother, and not mention the children and you can not talk about both and not mention the position of women and children in society since you have information.

From the oscillatory trends of civilization, that still happens, it is possible to observe the existence of specific conflicts between the values of domination and partnership.

Riane Eisler identified that there was a rise of values of "maternal identification" or female, in England, for example, when a woman sat on the throne.

According to her, this rise was responsible for the awakening of a consciousness of responsibility towards others.

There was also a new love in relation to free learning, which found expression in learning and in creating colleges for students. There was a flow of creative energy especially in poetry, theater, architecture painting and music.

In the view of Eisler, although in periods of gilânico resurgence (female social force) has been a remarkable rise of more peaceful values, some more equitable way , and consequently allowed a qualitative leap in terms of "cultural evolution" for the society in the time when they occurred, the reassertion male control always protruded and stands out with more emphasis, after a time, during these periods. The motivation of power, seemed and still seems which requires dominate and conquer other human beings.

Taking into account several studies we can begin to see how the periods of war and repression are always preceded by periods of weakening gilânica culture. And as periods of domination can infiltrate within a society.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

A motivação do poder, parecia e ainda parece, necessitar dominar e conquistar outros seres humanos.

(LCB) Betita, these are excellent points. And they suggest the connection between the social connection between mother and child and the societal connection between the social and the character of socialization. A couple of small points in the service of a larger point that I will make when next I speak:

1. I do not suggest that the social connection between mother and child is gendered.  That is, I will posit a distinct between the biological connection between a woman and the child she gives birth to, and the social connection between a child, once born, and the person who serves as her mother,  That mother might be gendered male or female, or neither. It it is the social connection that is important.   We should, however, consider the effects of the socialization of gender in the construction of societal relations beyond the social connection between child and mother.

2.  The social connection is most interesting, at this stage, for what it may tell us about the way that the individual comes to know herself.  What requires deeper thought is the way in which the self is embedded, from the beginning of life, in the self of another.  One comes to know oneself first through one's mother.
3.  The self, then, is wholly self referential in the sense that it exists in and of itself.  It is its own object and the essence of firstness (eg here).  But consciousness of the self is social (not societal) in the sense that it emerges in the interaction of beings, where both are aware of the interaction but only of which understands the way in which that interaction imprints itself on both. How much of the self is then the self or instead the reflection of the self ion the other.  Put a different way--does a child first know itself as itself only as a reflection of what she sees of herself through her mother? It is in that initial interaction that the possibilities of autonomy come into being.  And that autonomy appears to be dependent on the relationship between a first (the object/child) and the second (the mother/signifier).  That, in turn, might provide some insight into the complexity that follows--the construction of the societal, and its techniques (law, culture, and community).
__________
