Part 36: (Narcissus, Talismans, Cognition and the Depressed Academic): Dialogues on a Philosophy for the Individual

(Pix (c) Larry Catá Backer 2015)

With this post Flora Sapio and I (and friends from time to time) continue an experiment in collaborative dialogue. The object is to approach the issue of philosophical inquiry from another, and perhaps more fundamentally ancient, manner. We begin, with this post, to develop a philosophy for the individual that itself is grounded on the negation of the isolated self as a basis for thought, and for elaboration. This conversation, like many of its kind, will develop naturally, in fits and starts. Your participation is encouraged. For ease of reading Flora Sapio is identified as (FS), and Larry Catá Backer as (LCB).

The friends continue their discussion from Parts 33-35, in which Betita Horm Pepulim responds to the idea of philosophy as a form of bureaucratism of the undifferentiated self.

(BHP) Dear Larry Catá Backer, interesting this his remark about being a problem not of philosophy but an problem of the bureaucrat. The bureaucracy is an interesting topic for this our discussion. When I reflect on this subject, it is impossible for me not to think about the notion of community as an instrument of protection against the will, otherness that reveals the humanity of the other. And it is impossible for me, too, not think about to the notion of individuation, and the imposition of limits, regarding the actions of the collective about the individual . We can not forget that community and individuation always walked together to protect the men against intolerance and arbitrariness. And that, to me, without much effort leads to the link between philosophy and bureaucracy. I think there is no one area to take ownership of this discussion. I'm a diehard fan of systems thinking and of interdisciplinarity. Stressing that I think the philosophy of bureaucracy is very beautiful . PS. I will wait for the response of Ulisses Schwarz Viana to post about it. PS (2) I know you didn't mean that an specific area knowledge has an exclusive relationship with the problem that you were referring to. I understand what you meant (as you can see I love using the PS feature).

(LCB)  And indeed, it is to systems thinking, to the machine, that we have sacrificed even the appearance of individuation in favor of the well tended and quite well walled meadows of managed individual expression of undifferentiated individualization. Management, however sophisticated, calls for the construction of managed space, and a philosophy of the herd, of eugenics, of socialization, of the vanguard, of false consciousness.  It is a philosophy, economics, and political theory--it is a religion--in which the individual is socialized and obliterated.

Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.
Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness. (Proverbs 25:4-5)
It is in that sense that I understand Flora's notion of the talisman. But I wonder whether it is possible to choose as freely as Flora suggests where the relational self (my undifferentiated self) overwhelms and substitutes its own template (talisman) of individuation) coming from the community for the possibility of a differentiated self developed within the self.  It is in this sense as well that one understands the reason Nietzsche mocked free will (and for a reason that was theologically sound from a Christian tradition):  that what passes for individual will is in fact anything but.  It is rather the individual implementation (application) of an individuated expression of undifferentiated will through the individual.  The person becomes a pass through, a conduit. She gives some unique characteristics to what is passed through (the way that electrical current will be minutely shaped by its conducting element--copper, aluminum, etc.) but she passes through, she performs, what she has received, in the way that, whatever the element, wires conduct electricity.

Flora thus perceptively considers the talismanic quality of the self, and its quality as idol--for the witch, the devil; for the artist the muse; etc.--and the curious way in which these talismans yake on a representational quality, that of the amalgamation of the projection of the undifferentiated self through the talisman, into the individual, and then out again as the expression of the individuated  will of the aggregate self (the devil, the muse, etc.). And thus our depressed academic--the pathos of passive knowledge of the passivity of the undifferentiated self--expressed as an unbridgeable contradiction between the idealized undifferentiated self (the "academic") and its reality (the "knowledge worker").  The depressed academic produces value, not knowledge, but must preserve the appearance of producing knowledge in part because the value of the work is increasingly captured to the institution within which her self identity, and the performance of the self, is managed. That "The most commonly reported conditions are anxiety (83%), depression (75%) and panic attacks (42%), though a significant minority (15%) also report suffering from eating disorders, and 11% have self-harmed" (from HERE) is no surprise. Anxiety disorders may well express an extreme allegiance to the social (undifferentiated) self, the need to please, which might carry costs, as Flora suggests, "slowly and systematically killing his True Self, to make ample room for his False Self."  In contrast, Flora offers up the Magician--Hermes, Loge, Coyote, Eleggua, Odysseus--the the notion of the differentiated self rooted within society and expressing itself as deception, trickery, cunning, and the mastery of the many pathways of life.  It is to those notions that I will turn to later.

(BHP) Interesting its placement Larry, you're right, I was antagonistic. Weber said that in the bureaucracy is concentrated, also, the impersonality, he analyzed the process of rationalization of society and the "disenchantment" of the world, based on the utilitarian of consequences calculation.

Weber contributes to the understanding of the rationalization process, in which the traditional society, which is based on beliefs and values, turns into a society based on relationships where the ends, are more important than the means.

Norbert Elias, systematized the problem of the relationship between the individual and the society. For this author, the concern of society with regard to the habits and patterns of behavior of certain groups, was spread, for many generations, over time, distinguishing thereby a social group, and subsequently the individual, of other segments and of others individuals. For him, this indicates that individuals of a generation at birth, enter the civilizing process, adapting to a pattern of behavior built throughout the process social process, in the process of formation of conscience and in the social habits of previous generations.

In this perspective, the social patterns of self regulation are passed from one generation to another. Self regulation and the search for new emotions what a individual experiences and develops within himself contact the social, they make the single individual, and are particular to each generation, and consequently specific to each society.

The individualization process to Elias, is related to the issue of individual interdependence and society.

But this does not mean that the individual, make for himself, a life free without restrictions, we need to understand this does not happen, why since your childhood the individual is conditioned by the other.

In Elijah's understanding, these restrictions they will being sedimented in societies, and configuring groups, tribes and institutions with behaviors and different habits and people, with a certain power diluted in a specific social formation.

For this reason, why individuals are socially conditioned by their self images, and by images that others in your group, assign to it, is that form social groups where humans bind to each other in a life in society.

What can mean that the relationship between society and the individual, can only really be understood if we investigate the entities in interdependence, changing and procedurally, and not as, two opposing or overlapping entities.
