At a time of profound international upheaval, identifying new sources of structural resilience for human rights has become increasingly urgent. One such source may lie in the multilayered character of contemporary legal systems, and in the capacity of legal actors—particularly courts and judicial actors—to drive, mediate, and sustain transformative change across domestic, regional, and international levels.
Against this backdrop, we ask what emerges when global constitutionalism’s concern with constitutional ordering beyond the state is brought into conversation with transformative constitutionalism’s emphasis on law as an instrument of social and political change. We invite theoretical and empirical contributions exploring this intersection and its potential for rethinking how human rights can be protected and transformed across different layers of the global legal order.
Selected contributors will be invited to participate in two workshops, first online and subsequently in person, with a selection of contributions then forming the basis of a special issue proposal to Global Constitutionalism.
