[Today, I would also like to say that struggle itself is a kind of happiness.]
Struggle is at the root of most human engagement with themselves and with the world around them. Humans have built enormously important and powerful systems the principal point of which is to manage, direct, and understand the parameters of struggle--of the self, of the self in their own individuated communities, of the self within the collectives that appear necessary as a venue for struggle, economic, social, cultural, religious, and political. Struggle is sometimes clothed in the imperatives of perfection. That can involve self-actualization, or collective actualization. All of these are meant to direct that struggle towards something, which is then measured against something else. Nietzsche spoke about the value of sin in religious systems of personal and communal actualization, though he focused on its failures as system even as he described the power of its structures and the underlying cognitive cage within which it could be built--good or bad. But he also spoke to the inevitability of self overcoming (eg here ¶ 370).

If people were the fuel for the attainment of communal perfection, and their development was an essential feature of that perfection, then a vanguard of social forces committed to accelerating that process in "backwards" societies would require two primary instruments. First it required contradiction as the conceptual cage within which a Socialist path toward communal perfection could be constructed and its direction set. That notion of contradiction fundamentally formed and shaped the way in which struggle could serve as the language and conceptual framework both justifying and providing a method of assessing compliance with the normative goals for which struggle served as the means of propulsion forward. Its essence, as struggle, made it possible to assume that struggle was a organic to humans as its goals (Mao Zedong On Contradiction). Second contradiction required a material form, in this case it required modernization. Modernization itself could be rationalized and divided into components: (1) borrowing from states and cultures farther down the road to development toward communal perfection, (2) using technology (and increasingly higher quality production of things and people)) to work on backwards populations to accelerate their socialization and advancement along a "socialist" path toward a communal perfection, and (3) the vanguard itself required its own self-revolution not just to keep up with the times, but to stay ahead of the masses whose instruction and modification was essential to the acceleration in material and spiritual form, of the process of struggle leading to an inevitable communal perfection. In it in this form, and within this conceptual universe that one aligns struggle and unity within the framework of a Socialist Path on an accelerated track toward the realization of communal perfection.
These are the points that the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China appears to have sought to emphasize, especially to Chinese patriotic elements and to cadres within the architecture of institutional vanguard communism, in a short collection of snippets of a variety of remarks and speeches (from October 2016 to April 2025) that the General Secretary delivered over the last several years. That collection, 习近平 团结奋斗是中国人民创造历史伟业的必由之路 [Xi Jinping, Unity and struggle are the only way for the Chinese people to create historical achievements] was published in 《求是》[Qiushi, Seeking Truth] Issue 2025/13, the official theoretical journal and news magazine of the Chinese Communist Party, published bi-monthly by the Central Party School and the Central Committee. The 22 extracts provide a variety of different perspectives around these core elements of Chinese Marxist-Leninism.
If for no other reasons, those perspectives provide a quite clear window on the ideological drivers of the host of specific policies and the forms of engagement with the world that mark Chinese thinking in its new era of historical development--struggle, dialectics, modernization, high quality production, opening up, and globalizing both struggle and unity along the inevitable Leninist pathways are all nicely illustrated in these extracts. As one reads through them one can note the way that each touches on one of the foundational themes of core Chinese Marxist-Leninism now deployed in a contextually relevant way. It helps provide examples of the way that a founding ideology can shape the cognitive spaces within which it is possible to see the world in a specific way, and thus seeing it that way, to then rationalize it, and on the basis of its structural inevitability, to seek to perfect it in accordance with its terms. One might also clearly tie these elements, directed toward the masses, and lower level cadres, as the basic teaching tools through which the more formal development of theory, say in the Report of the 20th CPC Congress, or in the 20th Congress 3rd Plenum Reports, can be made more accessible to those who are expected to serve as the shock troops of development (see also here, here, here, here, here, and here).

我在今年的新年贺词中说过，幸福都是奋斗出来的。今天，我还要说，奋斗本身就是一种幸福。只有奋斗的人生才称得上幸福的人生。奋斗是艰辛的，艰难困苦、玉汝于成，没有艰辛就不是真正的奋斗，我们要勇于在艰苦奋斗中净化灵魂、磨砺意志、坚定信念。奋斗是长期的，前人栽树、后人乘凉，伟大事业需要几代人、十几代人、几十代人持续奋斗。奋斗是曲折的，“为有牺牲多壮志，敢教日月换新天”，要奋斗就会有牺牲，我们要始终发扬大无畏精神和无私奉献精神。奋斗者是精神最为富足的人，也是最懂得幸福、最享受幸福的人。正如马克思所讲：“历史承认那些为共同目标劳动因而自己变得高尚的人是伟大人物；经验赞美那些为大多数人带来幸福的人是最幸福的人”。

中国人民是具有伟大团结精神的人民。在几千年历史长河中，中国人民始终团结一心、同舟共济，建立了统一的多民族国家，发展了56个民族多元一体、交织交融的融洽民族关系，形成了守望相助的中华民族大家庭。特别是近代以后，在外来侵略寇急祸重的严峻形势下，我国各族人民手挽着手、肩并着肩，英勇奋斗，浴血奋战，打败了一切穷凶极恶的侵略者，捍卫了民族独立和自由，共同书写了中华民族保卫祖国、抵御外侮的壮丽史诗。今天，中国取得的令世人瞩目的发展成就，更是全国各族人民同心同德、同心同向努力的结果。中国人民从亲身经历中深刻认识到，团结就是力量，团结才能前进，一个四分五裂的国家不可能发展进步。我相信，只要13亿多中国人民始终发扬这种伟大团结精神，我们就一定能够形成勇往直前、无坚不摧的强大力量！

明天的中国，奋斗创造奇迹。苏轼有句话：“犯其至难而图其至远”，意思是说“向最难之处攻坚，追求最远大的目标”。路虽远，行则将至；事虽难，做则必成。只要有愚公移山的志气、滴水穿石的毅力，脚踏实地，埋头苦干，积跬步以至千里，就一定能够把宏伟目标变为美好现实。
明天的中国，力量源于团结。中国这么大，不同人会有不同诉求，对同一件事也会有不同看法，这很正常，要通过沟通协商凝聚共识。14亿多中国人心往一处想、劲往一处使，同舟共济、众志成城，就没有干不成的事、迈不过的坎。

团结奋斗是党领导人民创造历史伟业的必由之路。团结奋斗要靠目标凝心聚力，新征程上我们就要靠中国式现代化进一步凝心聚力、团结奋斗。中国式现代化是全体人民的共同事业，也是一项充满风险挑战、需要付出艰辛努力的宏伟事业，必须坚持全体人民共同参与、共同建设、共同享有，紧紧依靠全体人民和衷共济、共襄大业。

Unity is a powerful force to overcome all difficulties and an important guarantee for rallying people's hearts and achieving great achievements. In the journey of striving for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, we must consolidate the great unity of the people of all ethnic groups in the country, strengthen the unity of all parties, groups, ethnic groups, classes and all aspects, resolutely safeguard national unity and social harmony and stability, and resolutely oppose any separatist activities that undermine unity and unity. We must gather the wisdom and strength of all the people, stimulate the creative vitality and development momentum of the whole society, and let the mighty power of all Chinese people who are united and struggling together become a powerful driving force for realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

In my New Year's message this year, I said that happiness comes from struggle. Today, I would like to say that struggle itself is a kind of happiness. Only a life of struggle can be called a happy life. Struggle is hard, and hardship and hardship will lead to success. Without hardship, it is not a real struggle. We must have the courage to purify our souls, sharpen our wills, and strengthen our beliefs in hard struggle. Struggle is a long-term process.
