For the last five years I have written of the annual letter of the Cuban Council of the High Priests of Ifá (Consejo Cubano De Sacerdotes Mayores De Ifá), the practitioners of traditional religion brought over from West Africa with the slave trade and now naturalized as a powerful indigenous religion throughout the Caribbean and growing in the United States. (e.g., 2016, 2015; 2014; 2013; 2012).

- Que debemos ser muy organizados en todos los aspectos de la vida, para garantizar una mejor forma de vida
- Hay que actuar con justeza y buena conducta para evitar bochornos, ya que esto conllevaría a reacciones adversas que afectarían las relaciones interpersonales
- Debemos este año darnos un pargo a la cabeza previa consulta con sus padrinos
- Evitar el consumo de estupefacientes y el exceso de ingestión de bebidas alcohólicas
- Se recomienda vestir de blanco
- Hay que acudir a los mayores, y respetarlos para tener siempre la bendición de los mismos, y de Olodumare
- Cuidarse de enfermedades en las vías respiratorias, en el aparato digestivo, sistema cardiovascular, los pulmones, la vista, los riñones, la columna vertebral y las enfermedades de transmisión sexual
- Debemos mantener la unidad, tanto familiar como religiosa
- Hay que buscar la fuerza en la razón y no la razón por la fuerza
- Se debe prestar esmerada atención a la posible proliferación de hechos de corrupción, robo y dilapidación de los erarios públicos
- Prestar especial atención a los fenómenos climatológicos, que conlleven a pérdidas, tales como penetraciones del mar, sismos, lluvias, inundaciones, huracanes, etc.
- Hay que incrementar la atención a la educación de los niños y los valores del género humano
- No se deben ingerir comidas atrasadas y frutas arenosas con el fin de evitar problemas digestivos
- Exige ser humildes y sencillos, evitar la soberbia, el genio y la mala forma para con los demás
- Velar por la higiene en todos los órdenes
- Incentivar los hábitos laborales, el sentido de pertenencia y el amor al trabajo en todos los sectores sociales
- Incentivar los cambios económicos y socioculturales entre países
- Comprometernos solo a aquello que seamos capaces de cumplimentar
- Evitar delegar en otros lo que es nuestra responsabilidad realizar
- La protección en áreas costeras evitando la contaminación por desechos y desperdicios que afectan el ecosistema y la salud de las personas
- Insistir en la organización del trabajo y la familia, que nos permita alcanzar acuerdos, evitando la violencia
Nota: en aras de esclarecer cualquier duda, se recomienda, acudir a los mayores.
El primero de diciembre de 2016, con la presencia de un número significativo de babalawos cubanos y de otros países y los miembros del Consejo Cubano de Sacerdotes Mayores de Ifá, se realizaron las ceremonias correspondientes a la preaperutra de la letra del año 2017 en la Asociación Cultural Yoruba de Cuba.

The predictions and guidance for 2017 continue to evidence a strong emphasis on force, emotion and upheaval. Violence at work, in one's work, within families, and among and within states. Violence is the marker of the great temptation of the year--the emotional explosion and its aftermath. Arrayed against those explosions are cautions to use reason rather than emotion. Loss of control is connected to and may mimic the violent swings in weather and in social movements. Loss of control is tied as well to uncleanliness and disease.
Labor appears to have a significant role to play in annual affairs. The call to better create loyalty at work implies a strong indictment of labor systems as a means of treating individuals as productive forces with respect to which there are no social or political obligations. That will only invite an equal and explosive counter-action.
There is also a sense that things can get out of control without significant attention. That applies to personal control, societal control and the control of leaders in their direction of the affairs of their institutions. Along with that is an emphasis on responsibility. It is clear that accountability for loss of control, and violence, will be directly attributable to leaders. And that accountability itself may provoke further violence. And with with violence will come a loss of good order.
At the same time there is a strong call for cooperation--at the personal, national and international level. That cooperation is meant to touch on political, societal, cultural and economic matters. Yet the call for cooperation is to be read against the strong pull for its disintegration.
Indeed, what emerges more than anything else is volatility, with an uncertain outcome. There are definite directions to the volatility--the dangers of ego and cults of personality, the tension between action and thought, and the circular nature of error (that one can learn from errors already committed). What are born in this year--beginnings, the efforts of the will, pathways producing unity and the struggle of opposites, separation and discord. Yet this is hardly the year to escape the action--it appears that the reverse is true, that it will be difficult to avoid being caught up ion the churning that the year will bring.
All in all the 2017 Annual Letter posits the great danger of the year--the explosion of emotion, the letting go of reason that can undo the world order and its component parts. Though Oggun (Vulcan) and Yemanaya (Juno) are the ordering aspects of the orishas that guide the year, the predictions themselves suggest that Oya is very much a part of the equation. This is the year for the destructive and fertilizing power of life. . . but both destruction and fertilization may well be violent affairs.
