The Cuban Communist Party propaganda and news organ, Granma, has recently published a Speech, entiled "Al imperio que nos amenaza le decimos: ¡Cuba somos millones!" [To the Empire that Threatens Us We Say: We Cubans Number Millions] given by Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, and also the President of the Cuban (People's) Republic. It is meant to both mourn the loss of Cuban personnel attached to the person of Mr. Maduro who fell during the action that brought Mr. Maduro to face charges of transborder banditry and anti-social behavior in the United States. It is also meant to provide greater publicity to the now well established Cuban strategy of "total war" in the event of some triggering event--in the minds of the Cuban State something that looks like an American invasion or at eats a projection of power within the national territory. The conceptualization of "total war" and its activation is a prominent feature of the website of the Cuban armed forces (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias).
La Defensa Nacional se define como la acción coordinada de todas las fuerzas y recursos de la sociedad y el Estado, realizada bajo la dirección del Partido Comunista de Cuba, para enfrentar la agresión militar externa y conjurar en el marco de la misma, la subversión interna, con el objetivo de: (1) Preservar la soberanía e independencia nacional, la integridad territorial del país, el carácter socialista y el sistema político, económico y social establecido en la Constitución de la República; (2) Proteger la población y la economía nacional; (3) Mantener la vida de la nación; (4) La manifestación de la Defensa Nacional en los diferentes niveles de la división política administrativa del país se denomina Defensa Territorial.
La Defensa Nacional tiene como fundamento la concepción estratégica de Guerra de Todo el Pueblo, la cual resume la experiencia histórica acumulada por la nación cubana en lo referente a la defensa de la Patria y sintetiza la decisión de dar una solución de masas al problema de la defensa del país, asegurándole a cada ciudadano revolucionario, a cada patriota, un lugar, un medio y una forma de combatir al agresor.La esencia de la Guerra de Todo el Pueblo consiste en que la fuerza de la Revolución Cubana está en la unidad del pueblo y de todas sus fuerzas dirigidas por el PCC sustentado en el principio Marxista-Leninista, el ideario martiano, y el pensamiento ético revolucionario del líder de la Revolución el compañero Fidel Castro. Ella garantiza que cada ciudadano tenga un medio, un lugar y una forma de participar en la lucha.
National Defense is defined as the coordinated action of all the forces and resources of society and the State, carried out under the direction of the Communist Party of Cuba, to confront external military aggression and, within that context, to counter internal subversion, with the objective of: (1) Preserving national sovereignty and independence, the territorial integrity of the country, and the socialist character and political, economic, and social system established in the Constitution of the Republic; (2) Protecting the population and the national economy; (3) Maintaining the life of the nation; (4) The manifestation of National Defense at the different levels of the country's political-administrative division is called Territorial Defense.
National Defense is based on the strategic concept of the War of the Entire People, which summarizes the historical experience accumulated by the Cuban nation in the defense of the Homeland and synthesizes the decision to provide a mass-based solution to the problem of the country's defense, ensuring that every revolutionary citizen, every patriot, has a place, a means, and a way to fight the aggressor. The object is to deploy the nation to protect the national system of Cuban Marxist Leninism; one wonders whether, as well the system of Cuban Marxist Leninism ought to be deployed to protect the nation. In fulfillment of the activities planned for Defense Day and with the objective of increasing and improving the level of preparation and cohesion of the leadership bodies and personnel, the National Defense Council met this Saturday to analyze and approve the plans and measures for transitioning to a State of War, as part of the country's preparation under the strategic concept of the War of the Entire People. Army General Raúl Castro Ruz was kept informed of the proceedings, which he described as a good and efficient meeting. (National Defense Council Session)
The Cuban military establishment, along with the leadership core of the Cuban Communist Party are right to think more openly about this element of their national life in the wake of recent actions in Venezuela. It is also a gamble to gauge support in the face of an American decision to project force as anything more that after the fact condemnation of the U.S. Again Venezuela is not a reassuring model of Latin American solidarity in ways that serve Cuban defensive interests at the moment, What keeps the present situation stable is the ability of that coalition of Latin America States to make the case for American forbearance.

Compatriotas:
El 3 de enero de 2026, en la hora más oscura de la madrugada, mientras su noble pueblo dormía, Venezuela fue arteramente atacada por orden del presidente estadounidense Donald Trump.
Se confirmaba una vez más, ahora en su patria de nacimiento, la visionaria sentencia de Bolívar en cuanto a que «los Estados Unidos parecen destinados por la providencia a plagar la América de miserias en nombre de la libertad», y la advertencia de Ernesto Che Guevara de que «en el imperialismo no se puede confiar, ni tantico así, nada».
Bombas y secuestro fueron la respuesta de Estados Unidos a las declaraciones del Presidente venezolano, que horas antes se había mostrado dispuesto a dialogar sobre cualquier asunto.
Aquella fue una madrugada difícil para Cuba, al recibirse las primeras noticias del alevoso ataque contra varios estados del hermano país donde cumplen misiones cientos de colaboradores cubanos.
Transcurrieron horas muy amargas entre la indignación y la impotencia, después de conocer que habían sido secuestrados el presidente Nicolás Maduro Moros y su esposa Cilia Flores.
Quienes tenemos a los bravos combatientes de la Seguridad Personal como parte de nuestra familia y conocemos su espartana disposición a defender las vidas bajo su custodia, sabíamos, antes de confirmarlo, que se comportarían como titanes hasta en su última batalla (Aplausos).
«Solo sobre mi cadáver podrán llevarse o asesinar al Presidente», había declarado más de una vez el Primer Coronel Humberto Alfonso Roca, jefe del pequeño grupo de cubanos que esa madrugaba protegieron a la pareja presidencial al precio de sus propias vidas (Aplausos).
Ellos, junto a los combatientes de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias que también cayeron bajo el bombardeo de los atacantes, resumen en sus admirables hojas de servicio todas las cualidades que distinguen a los héroes, ¡a los héroes cubanos! (Aplausos.)
Así traspasaron las fronteras nacionales para insertarse como paradigmas de la historia de luchas por una América unida, sueño todavía irrealizado de Bolívar y Martí.
Los sagrados restos de nuestros 32 compatriotas llegaron ayer a la patria, como soldados eternos de la integración que nos debemos. Ellos son la única medida posible del valor y el carácter de los cubanos, leales a una hermandad forjada desde los tiempos de Bolívar, exaltada por Martí y que ya es legendaria por la entrañable relación de Fidel y Chávez, líderes de la integración regional, que en pocos años alfabetizó, devolvió la visión y llevó los servicios médicos y de superación a millones de venezolanos y a otros habitantes de nuestra América Latina y el Caribe (Aplausos).
Los promotores del ataque y el secuestro del presidente Maduro y su esposa, apelando a los más abominables métodos del fascismo, tejieron una espesa nube de mentiras y difamación contra los líderes bolivarianos antes de lanzarse cobardemente sobre Venezuela.
Desconociendo abiertamente los límites del Derecho Internacional, que hasta ese día garantizaban una mínima convivencia civilizada entre las naciones, la actual administración norteamericana abrió la puerta a una era de barbarie, despojo y neofascismo, sin importar todo lo que ello pueda significar en más guerra, destrucción y muerte.
Las noticias de la agresión nos golpearon duro. Por más de 25 años Cuba y Venezuela han compartido ideales y obras en favor de un mundo mejor posible, dispuestos a conquistar toda la justicia, por los caminos del socialismo, pero cada país con métodos propios y realidades diferentes.
Solo quienes desconocen el valor de la amistad, la solidaridad y la cooperación que se forjan entre los pueblos pueden confundir la relación entre cubanos y venezolanos como un mero negocio o como un vulgar intercambio de productos y servicios.
¡Ante todo, cubanos y venezolanos somos hermanos! (Aplausos.)
Dar nuestra propia sangre y hasta la vida por un pueblo hermano puede extrañar a otros, no a los cubanos.
Funcionarios estadounidenses han reconocido con asombro, pero también con inocultable admiración, la bravura de este puñado de hombres que, con marcada desventaja de fuerzas y capacidad de fuego, ofreció fiera resistencia a los secuestradores, lesionando incluso a varios de sus efectivos e inutilizando, hasta donde sabemos hoy, parcialmente uno de sus medios de transporte.
Por más que insistan en exaltar a sus soldados camuflados con cascos y chalecos antibalas, gafas de visión nocturna, sobreprotegidos por aviones, helicópteros y colmenas de drones, en medio de apagones intencionales, el asalto de los terroristas Delta no fue el paseo que le han vendido al mundo.
Un día sabremos toda la verdad, pero ni Trump ha podido negar que varios atacantes resultaron heridos.
Nuestros bravos combatientes, con armas convencionales y sin más chalecos que su moral y su lealtad al compromiso con la misión que cumplían, ¡pelearon hasta morir y golpearon a sus adversarios! (Aplausos.)
Ninguno era un superhombre; eran militares de honor, formados en la escuela ética de Fidel y Raúl, en el patriotismo, el antimperialismo y la unidad; herederos del ideario de Antonio Maceo, que inmortalizó a Baraguá con su viril negativa a negociar una paz sin libertad, y de Juan Almeida, quien gritó bajo una lluvia de balas, en medio de un cañaveral remoto: «¡Aquí no se rinde nadie!» (Aplausos.)
El actual emperador de la Casa Blanca y su infame Secretario de Estado no han parado de amenazarnos. «No creo que se pueda ejercer mucha más presión», ha dicho Trump en un tácito reconocimiento de los niveles extremos a los que ha escalado el bloqueo impuesto a Cuba por más de seis décadas.
«Entrar y destruir el lugar» es lo que, según su imperial concepción, les queda para someternos. La grotesca frase, que ha despertado profunda indignación en el pueblo cubano, solo puede interpretarse como una incitación a la masacre sin miramientos de un país que jamás ha promovido el odio hacia otro.
El patriotismo cubano lo expresó muy tempranamente Martí en Abdala: «El amor, madre, a la patria / No es el amor ridículo a la tierra, / Ni a la yerba que pisan nuestras plantas; / Es el odio invencible a quien la oprime, / Es el rencor eterno a quien la ataca» (Aplausos).
El pueblo de Cuba no es antimperialista por manual. El imperialismo nos hizo antimperialistas. Pero no solo Cuba, el mundo será cada vez más antimperialista a partir de este asalto a todas las normas internacionales, de esta ofensa a la inteligencia y a la dignidad humana, de ese acto de prepotencia criminal con el que un Estado soberano es atacado por un imperio que desprecia al resto de las naciones.
Todas las victorias del pueblo cubano están asociadas a la solidez de la unidad. Cada vez que se dividieron las fuerzas patrióticas, perdimos. Cada vez que se unieron, vencimos. Eso lo saben bien los enemigos de la nación y por eso apuestan a romper esa unidad.
Sus amenazas de ahora nos recuerdan las de casi todas las administraciones norteamericanas, controladas por los llamados Halcones, partidarios de la guerra. ¿Sabrán los halcones actuales que la revolucionaria estrategia de defensa, conocida como Guerra de todo el Pueblo, nació en respuesta a las peores amenazas de otros halcones? ¿Conocerán cuánto invirtieron sus predecesores guerreristas en la «era pos-Castro», después de fracasar en todos los intentos de destruir un liderazgo indestructible?
En los últimos días los jóvenes han viralizado en las redes la anécdota de la picúa, vivida y narrada por Fidel. Cuenta que, nadando por debajo del agua, vio venir una picúa hacia él y su primera reacción fue retroceder; pero enseguida lo pensó mejor y se lanzó hacia el agresivo pez que desapareció de su vista. Así hay que actuar frente al imperio, que es picúa, piraña, tiburón y alimaña (Aplausos). Pero insisto y reitero un dato: son jóvenes cubanos quienes viralizaron ese video en las redes.
Aquí estamos, no uno, sino millones de continuadores de la obra de Fidel, de Raúl y de su heroica generación. Tendrían que secuestrar a millones o desaparecernos del mapa y aún así los perseguiría por siempre el fantasma de este pequeño archipiélago que tuvieron que pulverizar por no poder someterlo (Aplausos).
¡No, señores imperialistas, no les tenemos absolutamente ningún miedo! Y no nos gusta, como dijo Fidel, que nos amenacen. ¡No van a intimidarnos! (Aplausos.)
Como los junquillos anudados en el centro del escudo, la unidad es el arma más poderosa de nuestra Revolución.
Queridos compatriotas:
Varios compañeros que llegaron a estar en la primera línea de fuego ya están en la patria, con sus cuerpos llenos de esquirlas de metrallas como medallas al valor. Uno de ellos, el Teniente Coronel Jorge Márquez, fue quien impactó a un helicóptero y quién sabe a cuántos de sus tripulantes. Lo hizo disparando su arma antiaérea, a pesar de estar herido y sangrando abundantemente en una pierna (Aplausos).
Coraje es la palabra con la que todos describen el enfrentamiento a los agresores. Y nombran al Primer Coronel Lázaro Evangelio Rodríguez Rodríguez, quien encabezó el intento de rescate de los primeros caídos, hasta que uno de los drones enemigos lo alcanzó: «Me hirieron. ¡Viva Cuba!» Fueron sus últimas palabras (Aplausos).
Cuando parece que el mundo entierra hasta su última utopía, que el dinero y la tecnología están por encima de todos los sueños humanos, que la humanidad se cansa, ¡justo en ese instante, 32 valientes cubanos ofrecen sus vidas y se agigantan, en una fiera batalla hasta la última bala!, ¡hasta el último aliento! (Exclamaciones de: «¡Gloria!») ¡No existen enemigos capaces de amedrentar tamaño heroísmo!
La prometedora juventud de la mayor parte de los caídos en combate nos trae a la memoria los versos de Martí a los ocho estudiantes de Medicina asesinados por la metrópoli española en 1871: «Cadáveres amados los que un día / Ensueños fuisteis de la patria mía». Todo lo que sabemos de sus historias personales, del amor y la bravura que distinguían sus acciones, del compromiso, la consagración y la entrega con que salieron al combate, hace más punzante el dolor; un dolor que no merma, sino que enaltece aún más el patriotismo y la generosidad de los cubanos (Aplausos y Exclamaciones de: «¡Vivan!») Hoy tiene 32 nuevos rostros, 32 nuevas historias la insuperable definición martiana de que «Patria es humanidad».
Ellos no solo defendieron la soberanía de Venezuela, al Presidente Nicolás Maduro y a su esposa Cilia Flores; defendieron la dignidad humana, la paz, el honor de Cuba y de nuestra América. Fueron la espada y el escudo de nuestros pueblos frente al avance del fascismo. ¡Y serán para siempre un símbolo, una prueba de que no hay pueblo pequeño cuando su dignidad es tan firme! (Aplausos.)
¡Gracias por el coraje y el ejemplo, compañeros! (Aplausos.)
Abrazamos hoy a sus seres queridos, madres, padres, esposas, hijos, nietos, hermanos, abuelos, a sus compañeros de armas y a sus amigos. El dolor no se comparte, decía el Comandante en Jefe en la despedida de duelo a los mártires de Barbados. «El dolor se multiplica. (...) ¡Y cuando un pueblo enérgico y viril llora, la injusticia tiembla!» (Aplausos y Exclamaciones de: «¡La injusticia tiembla!») Cantaba Silvio entonces: «Que tiemble la injusticia cuando llora el aguerrido pueblo de Fidel».
¡Cuba no amenaza ni desafía! ¡Cuba es tierra de Paz! Fue aquí en La Habana, y por iniciativa cubana, que hace 12 años, durante la II Cumbre de la CELAC, se proclamó a América Latina y el Caribe como Zona de Paz, una conquista brutalmente lacerada por el zarpazo fascista en Venezuela.
Esa vocación de paz no menoscaba en absoluto la disposición para el combate en defensa de la soberanía e integridad territorial. Si llegáramos a ser agredidos, pelearíamos con fiereza idéntica a la que nos legaron varias generaciones de bravos combatientes cubanos desde las guerras por la independencia en el siglo XIX, la Sierra Maestra, la clandestinidad y África en el siglo XX, hasta Caracas en este siglo XXI. No hay rendición ni claudicación posibles, como tampoco ningún tipo de entendimiento sobre la base de la coerción o la intimidación.
Cuba no tiene que hacer ninguna concesión política, ni eso jamás estará en una mesa de negociaciones para un entendimiento entre Cuba y Estados Unidos. Es importante que lo entiendan: siempre estaremos dispuestos al diálogo y al mejoramiento de las relaciones entre los dos países, pero en igualdad de condiciones y sobre la base del respeto mutuo. Así ha sido por más de seis décadas. ¡La historia ahora no será diferente!
Al imperio que nos amenaza le decimos: ¡Cuba somos millones! Somos un pueblo dispuesto a combatir, si nos agreden, con la misma unidad y fiereza de los 32 cubanos caídos el 3 de enero.

Comrades-in-arms and friends of our combatants;
Compatriots:
On January 3, 2026, in the darkest hour of the morning, while its noble people slept, Venezuela was treacherously attacked on the orders of US President Donald Trump.
Once again, now in his birthplace, Bolívar's visionary statement was confirmed: that “the United States seems destined by Providence to plague America with misery in the name of freedom,” and Ernesto Che Guevara's warning that “you cannot trust imperialism, not even a little bit, not at all.”
Bombs and kidnapping were the United States' response to the statements of the Venezuelan President, who hours earlier had expressed his willingness to dialogue on any issue.
That was a difficult morning for Cuba, upon receiving the first news of the treacherous attack against several states of the sister country where hundreds of Cuban collaborators were carrying out their missions.
Very bitter hours passed between indignation and helplessness, after learning that President Nicolás Maduro Moros and his wife Cilia Flores had been kidnapped. Those of us who have these brave personal security guards as part of our family and know their Spartan readiness to defend the lives under their protection, knew, even before confirmation, that they would behave like titans in their final battle (Applause).
"Only over my dead body will they be able to take or kill the President," First Colonel Humberto Alfonso Roca, head of the small group of Cubans who that morning protected the presidential couple at the cost of their own lives, had declared more than once (Applause).
They, along साथ the combatants of the Revolutionary Armed Forces who also fell under the attackers' bombardment, embody in their admirable service records all the qualities that distinguish heroes, Cuban heroes! (Applause.)
Thus, they transcended national borders to become paradigms in the history of struggles for a united America, a dream still unrealized by Bolívar and Martí.
The sacred remains of our 32 compatriots arrived yesterday in their homeland, as eternal soldiers of the integration we owe ourselves. They are the only possible measure of the courage and character of the Cuban people, loyal to a brotherhood forged since the time of Bolívar, exalted by Martí, and which is already legendary due to the close relationship between Fidel and Chávez, leaders of regional integration, who in a few years provided literacy, restored sight, and brought medical services and opportunities for advancement to millions of Venezuelans and other inhabitants of our Latin America and the Caribbean (Applause).
The perpetrators of the attack and kidnapping of President Maduro and his wife, resorting to the most abominable methods of fascism, wove a thick cloud of lies and defamation against the Bolivarian leaders before cowardly launching their attack on Venezuela.
Openly disregarding the limits of International Law, which until that day guaranteed a minimum of civilized coexistence between nations, the current US administration opened the door to an era of barbarism, plunder, and neo-fascism, regardless of what this may mean in terms of more war, destruction, and death. The news of the aggression hit us hard. For more than 25 years, Cuba and Venezuela have shared ideals and worked together for a better world, determined to achieve full justice through the paths of socialism, but each country with its own methods and different realities.
Only those who do not understand the value of the friendship, solidarity, and cooperation forged between our peoples can mistake the relationship between Cubans and Venezuelans for a mere business transaction or a vulgar exchange of products and services.
Above all, Cubans and Venezuelans are brothers and sisters! (Applause.)
Giving our own blood and even our lives for a brotherly people may surprise others, but not Cubans.
U.S. officials have acknowledged with astonishment, but also with undeniable admiration, the bravery of this handful of men who, despite being at a marked disadvantage in terms of forces, limited resources and firepower, they offered fierce resistance to the kidnappers, even injuring several of their men and, as far as we know today, partially disabling one of their means of transport.
No matter how much they insist on glorifying their soldiers, camouflaged with helmets and bulletproof vests, night vision goggles, overprotected by planes, helicopters, and swarms of drones, amidst intentional power outages, the Delta Force terrorists' assault was not the cakewalk they have sold to the world.
One day we will know the whole truth, but even Trump has not been able to deny that several attackers were wounded.
Our brave combatants, with conventional weapons and no vests other than their morale and their loyalty to the commitment to the mission they were carrying out, fought to the death and struck back at their adversaries! (Applause.)
None of them were supermen; they were honorable soldiers, trained in the ethical school of Fidel and Raúl, in patriotism, anti-imperialism, and unity; heirs of the ideals of Antonio Maceo, who immortalized Baraguá with his manly refusal to negotiate a peace without freedom, and of Juan Almeida, who shouted under a hail of bullets, in the middle of a remote sugarcane field: "No one surrenders here!" (Applause.)
The current emperor of the White House and his infamous Secretary of State have not stopped threatening us. "I don't think you can exert much more pressure," Trump has said, in a tacit acknowledgment of the extreme levels to which the blockade imposed on Cuba for more than six decades has escalated.
"To go in and destroy the place" is what, according to their imperial conception, remains for them to subdue us. The grotesque phrase, which has aroused profound indignation in the Cuban people, can only be interpreted as an incitement to the indiscriminate massacre of a country that has never promoted hatred towards another.
Cuban patriotism was expressed very early on by Martí in Abdala: "The love, mother, for the homeland / Is not the ridiculous love for the land, / Nor for the grass that our feet tread; “It is the invincible hatred of those who oppress her, / It is the eternal resentment of those who attack her” (Applause).
The Cuban people are not anti-imperialist by rote. Imperialism made us anti-imperialist. But not only Cuba; the world will become increasingly anti-imperialist as a result of this assault on all international norms, this offense to intelligence and human dignity, this act of criminal arrogance with which a sovereign state is attacked by an empire that despises the rest of the nations.
All the victories of the Cuban people are associated with the strength of our unity. Every time the patriotic forces were divided, we lost. Every time they united, we won. The enemies of the nation know this well, and that is why they are betting on breaking that unity.
Their current threats remind us of those of almost all US administrations, controlled by the so-called Hawks, proponents of war. Do these current hawks know that the revolutionary defense strategy, known as the War of the Entire People, was born in response to the worst threats of other hawks? Do they know how much their warmongering predecessors invested in the "post-Castro era," after failing in all their attempts to destroy an indestructible leadership?
In recent days, young people have viralized on social media the anecdote of the barracuda, experienced and recounted by Fidel. He tells how, swimming underwater, he saw a barracuda coming towards him, and his first reaction was to retreat; but he immediately thought better of it and lunged at the aggressive fish, which disappeared from his sight. That is how we must act in the face of the empire, which is a barracuda, a piranha, a shark, and a vermin (Applause). But I insist and reiterate one point: it is young Cubans who have viralized this video on social media.
Here we are, not one, but millions of continuators of the work of Fidel, Raúl, and their heroic generation. They would have to kidnap millions or wipe us off the map, and even then, they would forever be haunted by the ghost of this small archipelago that they had to pulverize because they couldn't subdue it (Applause).
No, imperialist gentlemen, we are absolutely not afraid of you! And we don't like being threatened, as Fidel said. You are not going to intimidate us! (Applause)
Like the reeds tied together in the center of the coat of arms, unity is the most powerful weapon of our Revolution.
Dear compatriots:
Several comrades who were on the front lines are already back home, their bodies riddled with shrapnel, like medals of valor. One of them, Lieutenant Colonel Jorge Márquez, was the one who hit a helicopter and who knows how many of its crew members. He did it while firing his anti-aircraft weapon, despite being wounded and bleeding profusely from his leg (Applause).
Courage is the word everyone uses to describe the confrontation with the aggressors. And they mention First Colonel Lázaro Evangelio Rodríguez Rodríguez, who led the attempt to rescue the first fallen soldiers, until one of the enemy drones hit him: “I’ve been wounded. Long live Cuba!” Those were his last words (Applause).
When it seems that the world is burying even its last utopia, that money and technology are above all human dreams, that humanity is growing weary, at that very moment, 32 brave Cubans offer their lives and rise to greatness in a fierce battle to the last bullet, to the last breath! (Exclamations of: “Glory!”) There are no enemies capable of intimidating such heroism!
The promising youth of most of those who fell in combat brings to mind Martí's verses to the eight medical students murdered by the Spanish metropolis in 1871: “Beloved corpses, you who one day / Were the dreams of my homeland.” Everything we know about their personal stories, the love and bravery that distinguished their actions, the commitment, dedication, and selflessness with which they went into battle, makes the pain even more poignant; a pain that does not diminish, but rather further exalts the patriotism and generosity of the Cuban people (Applause and Exclamations of: “Long live them!”) Today, the unsurpassed Martí definition that “Homeland is humanity” has 32 new faces, 32 new stories.
They not only defended the sovereignty of Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro, and his wife Cilia Flores; they defended human dignity, peace, and the honor of Cuba and our America. They were the sword and shield of our peoples against the advance of fascism. And they will forever be a symbol, proof that there is no small nation when its dignity is so firm! (Applause.)
Thank you for your courage and example, comrades! (Applause.)
Today we embrace their loved ones, mothers, fathers, wives, children, grandchildren, siblings, grandparents, their comrades in arms, and their friends. Pain is not shared, the Commander-in-Chief said at the funeral of the martyrs of Barbados. “The pain multiplies. (...) And when an energetic and virile people weep, injustice trembles!” (Applause and exclamations of: “Injustice trembles!”) Silvio sang then: “Let injustice tremble when the valiant people of Fidel weep.”
Cuba neither threatens nor defies! Cuba is a land of Peace! It was here in Havana, and at Cuba's initiative, that 12 years ago, during the II CELAC Summit, Latin America and the Caribbean were proclaimed a Zone of Peace, a conquest brutally lacerated by the fascist attack in Venezuela.
This commitment to peace does not in any way diminish our readiness for combat in defense of our sovereignty and territorial integrity. If we were to be attacked, we would fight with the same ferocity bequeathed to us by several generations of brave Cuban fighters, from the wars of independence in the 19th century, the Sierra Maestra, the underground resistance and Africa in the 20th century, to Caracas in this 21st century. There is no possibility of surrender or capitulation, nor any kind of understanding based on coercion or intimidation.
Cuba does not have to make any political concessions, nor will that ever be on the negotiating table for an understanding between Cuba and the United States. It is important that they understand this: we will always be willing to dialogue and improve relations between the two countries, but on equal terms and based on mutual respect. This has been the case for more than six decades. History will not be different now!
To the empire that threatens us, we say: Cuba is millions! We are a people willing to fight, if attacked, with the same unity and ferocity as the 32 Cubans who fell on January 3rd.
Compatriots:
Let us march united! And in memory of their heroic example, let us swear:
