China’s International Organizations: Evolution, Influence, and Strategic Purpose
How does China use its own international organizations to shape global norms? How have formats such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS evolved since their creation, and what role do they play in China-US global competition? In this talk, Eva Seiwert examines the role of China’s international organizations in Beijing’s foreign policy and presents findings from her new book The Shanghai Cooperation Organization and China’s Vision of International Relations (Bristol University Press, 2025).
Speaker: Eva Seiwert, is a Senior Analyst at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), where she focuses on China-Russia relations and China’s role in international organizations. She previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and as managing editor of 9DASHLINE. Eva has been a visiting researcher at King’s College London, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and the OSCE Academy in Bishkek. She holds a PhD in International Relations from Freie Universität Berlin and an MSc in East Asian Relations from the University of Edinburgh. Her book The Shanghai Cooperation Organization and China’s Vision of International Relations was published by Bristol University Press in May 2025.
